Pakistan is endowed with abundant natural resources, yet there exists a significant policy gap in effectively utilizing these resources to balance supply and demand. The country possesses vast coal reserves capable of producing up to 100,000 MW of electricity. Despite this potential, Pakistan has been grappling with a severe energy crisis for several years, which has adversely impacted economic growth and exacerbated poverty levels. In contrast, regional and OECD countries heavily rely on coal and peat resources to generate electricity. These resources contribute more than 40% to the energy mix in regional economies and about 34% in OECD countries' total production. This substantial reliance underscores the potential benefits that Pakistan could reap from optimizing its coal reserves. To address the ongoing energy crisis, Pakistan must focus on harnessing its coal reserves. Coal-based electricity generation is significantly cheaper than using oil and gas, making it a cost-effective solution to the country's energy woes. By developing and implementing effective policies to exploit these coal reserves, Pakistan can not only meet its energy demands but also foster economic growth and reduce poverty. Developing a robust infrastructure for coal mining and coal-fired power plants is essential. This includes investing in modern mining techniques, ensuring environmental sustainability, and building efficient transportation networks to move coal from mines to power plants. Moreover, establishing regulatory frameworks that encourage investment in coal-based energy projects while adhering to environmental standards is crucial. In addition to coal, Pakistan should also explore a diversified energy mix that includes renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydropower. This diversification can provide a more sustainable and resilient energy system, reducing the country's dependence on any single energy source and enhancing energy security. By closing the policy gap and implementing strategic measures to utilize these resources effectively, Pakistan can achieve a more stable and prosperous energy future. This approach will not only help in meeting the current energy demands but also set the stage for long-term sustainable growth and poverty reduction.
